Once again we have impressed by the commitment shown by MGN to manage their operational impacts of a difficult business climate and associated personnel changes. The equipment of the offices and printing sites have stuck in the detailed programmes needed to achieve improvements in the infrastructure and develop opportunities to optimize the use of resources. As a result of their efforts, GNM has substantially met its objectives to reduce carbon emissions and increase recycling office waste and also to achieve wider coverage by management systems certified independently.
Last year commented us vision ambitious that GNM become carbon positive must be translated in clearly defined actions. We welcome the efforts that have been made this year to interpret positive carbon in the context of the operations and this should provide a better basis for the setting of future goals.
The presentation of data from carbon print magazine of contract and the distribution of the newspaper wholesaler, for the first time this year, faces what had been a significant gap. The lack of data on the impacts of digital publication is the final obstacle to present a comprehensive carbon footprint and we await with interest the initiative of research in this area bearing fruit.
The scope and the consistency of the data for reporting on issues other than carbon followed better, but there are still opportunities for improvement. One notable difference is the lack of data on waste management, including hazardous waste, printing sites.
GNM has an excellent record of monitoring of the sustainability of their supply of paper and has fulfilled its objectives on the content of recycled and certified purchased paper fiber. The environmental database also used this year to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of the supply of newsprint and we believe that this is the first time in the newspaper industry.
While the role is a great example of commitment to supplier, GNM has not yet been able to demonstrate a truly strategic and systematic approach to reduce the impact of the products and services you purchase. Sustainable procurement modalities are instead now and this is a great opportunity to ensure that the priorities for improvement in the supply chain are identified and treated.
