Barack Obama announcement of aggressive new targets in U.S. fuel economy standards was received today as a "historic agreement" after a federalist leader.

Flanked by representatives of the automotive industry, the US President said: "this agreement on fuel standards is the single most important step never have taken as a nation to reduce our dependence on foreign oil."

"And as cars will go further in a liter of gasoline, our economy go beyond in a barrel of oil".

New corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) standards will increase from 2017 by 5% every year for cars and 3.5 per cent for light trucks through 2021, with an overall objective of an average of fleetwide 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025. The current rules established at 35 mpg in 2016 in 2008, when the automotive industry was compatible with humour after a Government bailout is $.

With a backdrop of a bitter partisan battle on raising the debt ceiling, the US President said that he sets the new standard in an average of 54.5 miles per gallon (mpg) by the year 2025 was an example of how engagement can work.

He said: "as well as we hope to close the deficit, this agreement is a reminder of why it is so important that we have a balanced approach." We have to make serious cuts while still investing in our future; "while it continues investing in education, research and technology of clean energy, which are so important to our economy".

Phyllis Cuttino, director of the Pew Group's clean energy program environment, said: "this is a historic compromise." It will be the greatest acceleration of fuel economy we have had. Auto companies have said themselves in good faith that we are really going to try to stretch. "Taking into account our history in fuel consumption is very impressive."

Cuttino says that standards are an important step towards the reduction of greenhouse gases in the transport, the source of more rapid growth of emissions in United States.

"In the absence of a comprehensive energy and climate change policy actually have to take a firm decision on small practical measures which can adopt and apply now because if you're going to wait five or 10 years the curve to comply with what the Science tells us that it becomes increasingly steep."

Cautioned against possible gaps will be watching closely, for example, efficiency for light trucks would not be necessary to accelerate at the same speed, and automobile manufacturers may also examine the progress made in the rules in 2021.

BMW was one of the first manufacturers to welcome to the new standard. President of manufacturing, Josef Kerscher, said:

"Regulatory consistency is critical to synchronize the development of products with government rules." In this way, companies have the time necessary to develop technologies that meet the requirements without ceasing to be profitable and sustainable. "The route from 2021 to 2017 is now clearly marked and we are ready for the challenge."

A report out today coinciding with the announcement of Ceres, a group of advocates of sustainable business, said that 5 per cent increase in the efficiency of fuel each year would create new 603,000 jobs nationwide by 2030.
